Un vol. in-12, pp. (24) 232 (14) 42 (16) et une planche grav\u00e9e hors texte. Veau brun de l’\u00e9poque, dos \u00e0 nerfs orn\u00e9. Reliure avec infimes traces de manipulation. Bel exemplaire exempt de fortes rousseurs que comme d\u2019usage sont pr\u00e9sents dans ce type d\u2019imprim\u00e9. Bien complet de la planche grav\u00e9e et du catalogue bibliographique qui forme la troisi\u00e8me partie de l\u2019ouvrage, avec titre \u00e0 part. Ex-libris ms Abraham Girard 1668. Thomas Bartholin fut parmi les plus c\u00e9l\u00e8bres m\u00e9decins hollandais de son \u00e9poque. Ce trait\u00e9 est un compte-rendu historique de usages th\u00e9rapeutiques de la neige ou de la glace, parmi lesquels son emploi comme anesth\u00e9sique dans les op\u00e9rations chirurgicales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A la suite on trouve un important essai microscopique d’Erasme Bartholin, fr\u00e8re cadet de Thomas, sur la structure de la neige. Le trait\u00e9 est illustr\u00e9 d’une planche qui montre l’agrandissement d’un cristal de neige. Il s’agit de la premi\u00e8re publication en cristallographie qui pr\u00e9c\u00e8de de bien 11 ans les recherches de Boyle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u00ab\u00a0Chapter XXII of this historically important book makes the first known mention of the use of mixtures of ice and snow for freezing to produce surgical anesthesia. The author states that the technique was taught to him by one Marco Aurelio Severino of Naples. In order not to kill the tissues and cause gangrene, the ice-snow mixture was to be applied on the parts in narrow parallel lines. After a quarter of an hour, feeling would be deadened and the part could be cut without pain. This may be the first mention of such a technique since the time of Avicenna. The treatise on snow crystals, by Bartholin’s younger brother, Erasmus, is the earliest publication on crystallography, and preceded Boyle on gems (1672) by eleven years. This interesting book also contains a list of Thomas Bartholin’s works.\u00a0\u00bb (Eimas)   <\/p>\n\n\n\n
